Developmental Biology course covers the molecular mechanisms that regulate vertebrate embryonic development from conserved evolutionary processes to defects and genetic mutations in human development and disease. Specific topics in Developmental Biology I focus on epigenetic modification; cell-cell interactions; model systems (fly, xenopus, and zebrafish), brain, skin, and limb development. Each module will also include discussions of current literature, with emphasis on processes and mechanisms underlying vertebrate development. The combination of Developmental Biology I and II is suitable for students preparing to pursue careers in research, medicine, and/or health, trainees studying mouse models with developmental defects, and those wishing to expand their understanding of growth and development of complex organisms.

Learner Outcomes

  • Compare and contrast the various types of cell signaling and the different types of cell-cell interactions that contribute to embryonic, organ and limb development, and evaluate applications for tissue specific therapeutic strategies.
  • Apply concepts of gene regulation to developmental biology and new gene therapy approaches for genetic diseases and cancer.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of non-human models in developmental biology such as flies, fish and mice, and applications to understanding human development and development of therapeutic approaches for human disease.
  • Assess the published literature in developmental biology, find relevant information, identify the main hypothesis proposed, analyze whether the data support or refute the hypothesis, and identify potential areas for further investigation.
