Immunology is a biological science studying how the immune system protects against pathogens and maintains host physiology. This elementary course will uncover the fundamental pillars of Immunology, which include the cellular and molecular partners participating in the orchestration of an immune response. In addition, it will study different experimental approaches utilized to inquire how the immune system works. Besides the protective role against infections, the immune system also operates as a platform to bridge different biological systems including the digestive and nervous system. To understand this process, we will study the tissue immunity in the context of the microbiota, the mucosal immune system and the tumor immunology. The analysis and comprehension of basic immunology is of a fundamental relevance for biological sciences and human health. Understanding how the immune system works has helped in the fight against infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS and SARS-CoV-2/COVID 19, and to develop therapies for chronic diseases including cancer and obesity.

Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. One CEU is equal to ten contact hours. Upon completion of the course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 1.4 CEUs.
