Course Description

***IMMU 339 is cross-listed with MEDI 339***

Cancer is an ancient disease with specific characteristics. Students taking this course will discuss the genetic basis of cancer, the initiation and progression of cancer, aberrant signal transduction in tumor cells and metastasis. This course will also have a journal-club component, which will enable students to read and discuss scientific journal articles related to the course. At the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify cancer biology terms and apply terms and information in textbook to case studies.
  • Differentiate various aspects that characterize a cancerous vs normal cell.
  • Identify potential therapeutic strategies using knowledge of various effectors in cancer cells.
  • Develop a detailed scientific presentation to include background information, experimental design, and findings.

Prerequisites: IMMU101, Introduction to Cancer Biology or equivalent background knowledge.

Credentials:

This course applies toward the Advanced Cancer Biology Discovery Badge interdisciplinary badge.

Textbook Information

There is a recommended textbook for IMMU/MEDI 339 that can be purchased through FAES or on your own. The name of the book is: The Biology of Cancer by Robert Weinberg, 2nd. Ed. (2012). The fee for the book is $237.00. If you would like to purchase the book through FAES, please register for the section (IMMU339-002) that includes the book.  Upon receipt of payment and fulfillment of your book order, your book can be picked up at the FAES Bookstore in Building 10 on the main NIH campus.
