Course Description

This course overviews the origin, definition, classification, life cycle, and structure of viruses. Students will be introduced to the basic virology concepts to prepare them for more advanced virology classes. Other major topics include a discussion of viral pandemics of the 20th and 21st centuries and the importance of vaccination against viral diseases.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Define viruses and reflect on theories of their origin.
  • Break down the life cycle of a virus.
  • Explain the basic structural components of a virus.
  • Compare and contrast historic viral pandemics.
  • Discuss the importance of vaccination.
