Course Description

R is a free and open-source data analysis platform that has recently gained a significant community presence in computational biology and bioinformatics discipline. During this course, students will learn the basics of R programming including functions, data types, and vector algebra. Students will also learn how to create R scripts and apply general programming features such as if-else decision-making constructs, for loops, and file input/output operations. Additionally, students will learn introductory skills to wrangle and visualize data. At the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation for data analysis using R.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Identify the purpose and use all four panes in an R studio.
  • Implement foundational R programming concepts such as data types, vector algebra, functions, decision making constructs, and looping constructs to analyze data.
  • Create basic visualization plots.
  • Develop scripts to wrangle data using the tidyverse approach.

Microcredential(s)

This course applies toward the Bioinformatics Endeavor digital badge.
