Course Description

Workshops generally run from 9:00am - 5:00pm.

Simultaneous access to two screens is highly recommended for adequate learning experience. Examples include two laptops, one computer with two screens, one laptop and one tablet, etc.

Creating compelling visualizations is an important aspect of biomedical research. The R programming language provides many libraries for creating beautiful figures and interactive web apps. As R is an open source project, it facilitates open science and reproducible research. R has been heavily used by bioinformaticians and data scientists for years, and has become increasingly easy to use. This course is designed to allow researchers to quickly dive into R and make visualizations for their own work. No previous experience in R is required. 

After this course you will be able to:

  • Load and prepare data for plotting
  • Generate common scientific plots like Bar graphs, scatter plots, and heat maps using multiple plotting libraries 
  • Use git, GitHub and binder to share plots
  • Use visualizations to explore new data
  • Combine multiple plots to create publication quality figures 
  • Design interactive web apps with R-Shiny 
  • Integrate plots from R into posters and papers

Recommended Materials 

  • A computer that necessary software can be installed on
  • Two monitors, or a tablet/phone + laptop/PC

Participants should be comfortable with basic computer skills. No previous experience in R is required. 

Day 1

  • Introduction to course
  • Intro to programming in R 
  • Intro to git and github
  • Introduction to the tidyverse ecosystem of packages
  • Intro to ggplot2 - basic plots 

Day 2

  • ggplot2 - complex plots 
  • Creating clean Tables
  • Customizing plots 
  • Scientific plots
  • Creating plots with maps 

Day 3

  • Combining Multiple plots 
  • Using visualizations to explore data
  • Picking the right visualization

Day 4 

  • Intro to R shiny 
  • Creating interactive plots
  • Making web apps 

Day 5

  • Recap of Course
  • Integrating plots in R into posters, papers and websites
  • Creating plots and web apps with participant’s data 
  • Presentation of participant’s plots to class

Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. One CEU is equal to ten contact hours. Upon completion of this course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 3.0 CEUs.

Refund Policy
100% tuition refund for registrations canceled 14 or more days prior to the start of the workshop.
50% tuition refund for registrations canceled between 4 to 13 days prior to the start of the workshop.
No refund will be issued for registrations canceled 3 days or less prior to the start of the workshop.

Cancellations received after hours are time marked for the following day.
All refund payments will be processed by the start of the initial workshop.
