Bundle Registration: 4 Workshop Bundle (COMM 001, COMM 002, COMM 003, and COMM 004)

Format: This course meets on 3-successive weeks from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM ET

Scientific and technical communication in government settings requires more than a clear explanation of your work. Early-career scientists and technical professionals must understand what policy audiences need to decide, what constraints they face, what evidence they trust, and what formats help them act.

This workshop helps participants translate their scientific and technical expertise into written, visual, and oral communication for policymakers and policy-adjacent audiences. It is designed for trainees, postdocs, early-career researchers, and aspiring policy-engaged scientists, engineers, and health professionals who may interact with federal, state, local, organizational, nonprofit, philanthropic, or private-sector decision-makers or the public.

Learner Outcomes

After participating in this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Explain how scientific and technical communication for policy and public audiences differs from communication for academic or technical audiences.
  • Identify the likely decision context, audience needs, constraints, and questions for a range of policymaker and policy-adjacent audiences.
  • Apply bottom-line-up-front, low-jargon, audience-centered framing to written products such as policy briefs, one-pagers, and meeting leave-behinds.
  • Use the 3 S’s framework - Skill, Stories, and Spaces - to connect evidence, lived experience, and constituency relevance.
  • Design visual products, including slides, posters, figures, and short videos, that convey policy relevance quickly and clearly.
  • Deliver a concise policy pitch or briefing and respond constructively to questions, disagreement, uncertainty, and competing priorities.
  • Use of AI tools for all the above activities, while maintaining accuracy, privacy, and ethical guardrails.
