NEUR 325 | Introduction to Neuroscience

NEUR 425 | Integrative Neuroscience: From Cells to Mind

This course series provides an integrated study of the human nervous system, connecting fundamental principles of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with contemporary concepts in cellular, systems, and cognitive neuroscience. Students examine how molecular and cellular mechanisms give rise to neural circuits, large-scale brain networks, and complex functions including sensation, movement, perception, emotion, language, memory, attention, and behavior. The course series explores the organization and function of the central and peripheral nervous systems, emphasizing the relationships between normal brain function and the neural circuit dysfunctions underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders. Students are introduced to contemporary experimental approaches in human neuroscience, including electrophysiology, neuroimaging, neuromodulation, and related methodologies, while developing the ability to critically evaluate primary scientific literature. Together, these topics provide a foundation for advanced study in neuroscience and an appreciation of emerging directions in translational and computational neuroscience.
 

Learner Outcomes

When you complete these courses successfully, you will be able to:

  • Explain the organization of the human nervous system by integrating principles of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and molecular, cellular, circuit, and systems neuroscience
  • Analyze how neuronal excitability, synaptic transmission, neuromodulation, and neural plasticity support sensory, motor, cognitive, and behavioral functions, including learning, memory, perception, emotion, and language
  • Describe and evaluate contemporary methods used to investigate the human nervous system, including electrophysiology, neuroimaging, neuromodulation, and related experimental approaches, recognizing their applications, strengths, and limitations
  • Critically evaluate primary neuroscience literature by interpreting experimental design, methodology, evidence, and conclusions in the context of human nervous system function and dysfunction
  • Interpret neurological and psychiatric disorders as disruptions of neural circuits and systems, and discuss emerging advances in neuroscience, including computational approaches, brain-computer interfaces, precision neuromodulation, and translational research

Prerequisites

These courses are designed to give an introduction into neuroscience. The second course in this series requires Introduction to Neuroscience or equivalent knowledge.
