This course integrates the organization and function of the nervous system, linking cellular neurobiology to higher brain functions. Moving beyond introductory concepts, the course examines how molecular and cellular mechanisms interact to form neural circuits, build large-scale brain networks, and shape vigilance, attention, and behavior. The analysis of these interactions across multiple levels of organization provides a framework for understanding both normal brain function and the circuit dysfunctions underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders. The course introduces modern experimental approaches in neuroscience, including electrophysiology, neuroimaging, neuromodulation, and emerging technologies, in the context of the scientific questions they address. This framework provides the foundation for advanced coursework in specialized areas such as sleep, consciousness, and neuropsychiatry.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Explain how molecular, cellular, circuit, and systems-level mechanisms interact to support nervous system function and behavior
  • Analyze how neuronal excitability, synaptic transmission, neuromodulation, and plasticity contribute to neural communication, learning, memory, and adaptive behavior
  • Describe how sensory, motor, cognitive, and large-scale brain network functions arise from distributed neural processing across multiple levels of organization
  • Evaluate the principles, applications, strengths, and limitations of contemporary neuroscience methods, including electrophysiology, EEG/MEG, functional MRI, optical imaging, optogenetics, and transcranial brain stimulation
  • Interpret neurological and psychiatric disorders as disruptions of cellular, circuit, and systems-level mechanisms, and critically discuss emerging directions such as brain-computer interfaces, computational neuroscience, precision neuromodulation, and open/reproducible science
