Course Description

This course explores the complex microbial communities that inhabit the human body and their essential roles in maintaining health. The course examines microbiomes across major body sites (gut, skin, oral cavity) and their influence on metabolism, immune function, and pathogen defense. Students investigate how disruptions (dysbiosis) contribute to disease and evaluate microbiome-targeted therapies. This course is valuable for students interested in modern biomedical science, public health, and clinical research, as the microbiome is rapidly transforming how we understand, prevent, and treat disease. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to critically evaluate emerging microbiome research, understand its real-world applications, and apply this knowledge to current challenges in medicine and public health. Emphasis is placed on interpreting scientific literature and translating microbiome discoveries into meaningful health insights and evidence-based decision-making.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:
  • Explain the composition and diversity of the human microbiome across major body sites.
  • Describe key methodologies used in microbiome research, including sequencing (16S rRNA, metagenomics) and bioinformatics tools.
  • Analyze the role of the microbiome in human health, including metabolism, immune development, and pathogen protection
  • Interpret current research on environmental, dietary, genetic, and lifestyle influences on the microbiome
  • Assess and apply microbiome-targeted therapies (e.g., probiotics, diet, FMT) to clinical or public health scenarios
