Course Description

This bundle provides a comprehensive introduction to the analysis and interpretation of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data with an emphasis on gene expression and functional genomics. Students will learn to analyze data generated from modern sequencing technologies—including DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), and ChIP sequencing (ChIP-seq)—using publicly available datasets and widely adopted bioinformatics platforms. The courses cover the complete analytical workflow, from quality control and preprocessing of raw sequencing data through differential expression analysis, clustering, identification of regulatory elements, and pathway analysis. Students will also examine the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene expression and learn to interpret gene expression patterns within the context of biological pathways, gene regulatory networks, and biomedical research. Through hands-on analyses and an independent project, students will develop practical skills for designing sequencing studies, analyzing genomic data, and communicating biologically meaningful results.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete these courses successfully, you will be able to:
  • Describe the principles, applications, and strengths of major next-generation sequencing technologies, including DNA-seq, RNA-seq, and ChIP-seq
  • Apply bioinformatics tools and publicly available resources to process, analyze, and interpret next-generation sequencing datasets
  • Perform key sequencing data analysis tasks, including quality control, alignment, quantification, differential gene expression analysis, clustering, and visualization
  • Explain the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene expression and describe the multiple layers of gene regulation in eukaryotic cells
  • Identify genomic regulatory elements and evaluate their potential roles in controlling gene expression.
  • Interpret gene expression data in the context of biological pathways, functional enrichment analyses, and gene regulatory networks
  • Communicate sequencing analysis results through effective visualizations, written summaries, and biological interpretation
  • Design an appropriate sequencing and gene expression analysis strategy to address a biomedical or biological research question
