Course Description

These courses provide a comprehensive introduction to microbiology and the human microbiome, exploring the biology of microorganisms and their essential roles in human health and disease. Students will examine the structure, physiology, genetics, and diversity of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites while developing an understanding of microbial growth, metabolism, and host-pathogen interactions. Building on these foundations, the Human Microbiome in Health and Disease investigates the complex microbial communities that inhabit the human body and their influence on metabolism, immune function, pathogen defense, and overall health. Students will explore modern microbiome research methods, including sequencing technologies and bioinformatics approaches, and evaluate how environmental, dietary, genetic, and lifestyle factors shape microbial communities. Through analysis of primary scientific literature and current biomedical research, students will critically assess microbiome-targeted interventions and the expanding role of microbiology in clinical medicine, public health, and biomedical research.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete these courses successfully, you will be able to:

  • Describe the structure, physiology, genetics, and functional characteristics of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites
  • Explain the fundamental principles of microbial growth, metabolism, genetics, and host-microbe interactions
  • Describe the composition, diversity, and functions of the human microbiome across major body sites and its role in maintaining human health
  • Explain how alterations in microbial communities contribute to disease and evaluate the relationships among microbes, immunity, metabolism, and pathogen defense
  • Describe and interpret modern microbiological and microbiome research methods, including PCR, CRISPR, 16S rRNA sequencing, metagenomics, and bioinformatics tools
  • Analyze the influence of environmental, dietary, genetic, and lifestyle factors on microbial communities and human health   
  • Critically evaluate primary scientific literature and current research in microbiology and microbiome science
  • Assess microbiome-targeted therapeutic strategies, including probiotics, dietary interventions, and fecal microbiota transplantation, and their applications in clinical and public health settings
