Course Outline

The use of genomic data among medical and research communities has risen sharply with the ubiquity of collection and decrease in sequencing costs. While these advances introduce considerable opportunities for scientific advancement, they also introduce risks that must be identified and addressed. This course will provide the non-security professional practical experience engaging with cyberbiosecurity and privacy terms, policy, and management frameworks. Participants will engage in risk framing, assessment and response that culminates in an analysis report. Risk management concepts will be reinforced by discussions, quizzes, risk analysis report, in which participants can apply the methods from the course.

This course is ideal for students who work with genomic data but are not familiar with cyberbiosecurity and privacy risk management practices. Professionals in the NIH community will be able to enhance their ability to identify and address security and privacy compliance requirements, as well as discuss and analyze risks associated with genomic data.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:
  • Explain cyberbiosecurity and privacy risks associated with genomic data
  • Select appropriate frameworks, industry practices, and compliance requirements
  • Summarize risks specific to common technology, like AI
  • Analyze risks to genomic data projects
  • Recommend responses to mitigate identified risks
  • Communicate risk analysis results
