Course Description

The course introduces the roles and opportunities of microbial biotechnology in human nutrition and health, with a special focus on novel compounds. The main organisms discussed are algae, fungi, and bacteria. It is aimed at professionals and advanced learners. The course not only provides information and builds skills relevant for various scientific areas within and beyond biomedical research, but it also offers knowledge of practical relevance on a personal level. It provides an overview of the main biotechnological aspects, commercial species, novel strains of great promise, key bioactive compounds, and their potential preventive and therapeutic use. It also elucidates the role of microorganisms as cell factories for producing biologically active substances.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Describe and interpret the roles and opportunities of microbial biotechnology in human nutrition and health, including preventive and therapeutic approaches to address certain health conditions
  • Recommend potential applications of different groups of microbial bioactive compounds in a field of human health within their area of interest or related to their research
  • Identify potential unmet needs and gaps in the field and propose future research directions
