Course Description

If you do not currently hold an NIH-issued badge, we ask that you email us at registrar@faes.org as soon as you register so we can start the visitor process. Once you confirm that you do not hold a current NIH badge you will receive a secure link from the VisitNIH system which will prompt you to input your information; further steps may be necessary if you are a non-U.S. person visitor. We also ask that you review the NIH Visitor Information page, so you are prepared for your visit to the NIH Bethesda Campus. Please note this process may take up to 45 days.

This workshop will take place at the National Institutes of Health, Main Campus in Bethesda, MD from November 18 - 20, 2025

Overview

Flow cytometry is a foundational technology that provides invaluable information about cellular populations to study immunological responses, diseases states, and developmental profiles. Expert instructors will provide hands-on training so attendees can confidently employ flow cytometric analysis in their research studies. Over the course of this three-day workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to prepare a multi-color fluorescence labeling panel of human peripheral blood samples and analyze them using both conventional and spectral flow cytometry analyzers. This unique workshop will also include cell cycle analysis using imaging flow cytometry techniques and a brief tutorial on FlowJo analysis software. By the end of the three-day session, attendees will have a solid understanding of the principles of flow cytometry and valuable hands-on experience with sample preparation and data analysis.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the workshop successfully, you will be able to:
  • Purify Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) from whole blood for subsequent staining
  • Stain cell samples with a variety of surface and intracellular markers for cytometric analysis
  • Perform Quality Control procedures on selected flow cytometers
  • Run your samples on conventional flow cytometers
  • Run your samples on imaging flow cytometers
  • Run your samples on spectral flow cytometers
  • Perform preliminary analysis of generated data using FlowJo

Prerequisites

This workshop is recommended for those who are new to flow cytometry.

Software/Equipment Requirements

Access to FlowJo is recommended, but not required

Credit
Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. One CEU is equal to ten contact hours.   Upon completion of this course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 3 CEUs.
