Course Description

This fully online course will enable high intermediate learners of English to understand and speak English more accurately, confidently, and fluently. Each week, students will complete a unit of study based on a different conversation theme in the Summit 2 textbook (see text information below). Through textbook and online exercises, as well as weekly discussion boards and assignments, we will learn new vocabulary and idioms. We will also learn to listen for details and to summarize conversations that we hear in everyday situations. Students will complete these exercises independently, and we will practice each week’s conversation topics during our Zoom sessions on Wednesdays at 5:00 - 6:30 PM ET. I will also have office hours on Fridays 1-2 PM ET.

This is a two-part course. Registration is required separately for each part of the course.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate increased conversational skills by building vocabulary, improving pronunciation and applying grammar concepts.
  • Participate in interactive discussions with natural social language conversation models.
  • Describe social and professional situations encountered in everyday life.
  • Increase active conversational skills, through speaking and writing
  • Increase self-confidence in speaking and writing about a variety of topics
  • Improve accent, rhythm, intonation and stress patterns

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required. Students may take English 207 and 208 separately or combine both courses. However, students must begin the course with a basic conversational ability in English.
