Course Description

Weekly live session, Thursdays from 5:00 - 6:30PM ET

This course is designed to help health providers to improve verbal communication skills with Spanish-speaking patients. It will help health professionals to build competence in interviewing, examining, and treating patients. It includes conversation and role-play situations in the context of different common medical situations. Students will learn the names of body parts, action verbs, and useful phrases typically used in a medical setting. Spanish concepts and correct pronunciation will be also covered.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Greet patients and conduct basic medical interviews in culturally appropriate Spanish
  • Ask about chief complaints, symptoms, medications, and follow-up needs using common medical vocabulary
  • Give simple instructions for exams, treatments, medications, diet, and frequency of actions
  • Use essential grammar structures (articles, gender/number agreement, key verb tenses, commands, questions, and prepositions) to communicate clearly
  • Describe body parts, vital signs, internal organs, family history, and basic physical or neurological exam steps
  • Understand and respond to everyday slang or informal terms patients may use
  • Communicate dates, times, ages, vital-sign numbers, and dosage instructions accurately
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness when interacting with Spanish-speaking patients
  • Complete a simulated patient encounter using clear, practical Spanish suitable for a clinical setting

SPAN 101, basic knowledge of Spanish, or permission from the instructor.
