Course Description

BIOF043 is an intensive, 3-day workshop designed for complete beginners who want to master R for data science and bioinformatics—with a modern twist. Instead of spending hours memorizing rigid syntax and troubleshooting typos, you will learn how to pair the power of R with modern AI coding assistants.

By leveraging AI from Day 1, you will bypass traditional programming roadblocks and fast-track your ability to analyze real-world data.

This is an interactive, online workshop. We will combine live coding, screencasts, and free-form discussions with real-world exercises.

Schedule
•    Day 1: Local Environment, AI Prompting, & Data Hygiene
•    Day 2: Visualization, Statistics, and Modeling
•    Day 3: AI Guardrails, Quarto, & Independent Lab Pipelines

When you complete the workshop successfully, you will be able to:

  • Prompt AI for Code: Effectively use AI assistants to generate, explain, and debug R code within your local development workflow.
  • Navigate RStudio: Write, organize, and execute R code through the RStudio integrated development environment (IDE) installed directly on your machine.
  • Wrangle Data: Load, clean, manipulate, and reshape raw biomedical and laboratory data using the tidyverse, including dplyr and tidyr.
  • Visualize with Impact: Generate publication-ready data visualizations using ggplot2.
  • Apply Statistics: Run essential statistical tests (t-tests, ANOVA, Chi-square) and regression models.
  • Automate Reproducible Research: Draft dynamic, reproducible reports and slide decks directly in RStudio using Quarto.
  • Bridge to Bioinformatics: Translate these foundational skills directly into common bioinformatics and data analysis pipelines.

Microcredential(s):

This course applies toward the Bioinformatics Endeavor digital badge.

Prerequisites:

Participants should be comfortable with basic computer skills.

Additional Information:

Software/equipment requirements
To maximize our 3 days together, participants must install R and RStudio on their local computers prior to the first day of class.

  • R & RStudio: You will need to download the free, open-source versions appropriate for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). Detailed, step-by-step installation instructions will be sent via email before the workshop. (Note: Ensure you install R before installing RStudio).
  • AI Coding Assistants: We will provide instructions for integrating free accounts or extensions so they are active and ready to use on Day 1.

FAQs:

  • Do I need to know programming or R to take this workshop?
  • Not at all. This course is designed specifically for genuine beginners to data science programming. By incorporating AI assistants from the start, we make learning the foundations easier than ever.
  • Do I need to know advanced math, statistics, or genomics to participate?
  • No. The foundational principles of this course are domain-agnostic. The examples focus on biomedical contexts relevant to the NIH, but no prior background in complex statistics or bioinformatics is required.
  • How long are the instructors available each day?
  • We will be live on Zoom from 8:45am to 5:00pm each day for coding assistance, questions, and debugging. We will also actively monitor our course communications for 2 days after the workshop concludes to support you as you transition to your independent work.

Credit

Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. One CEU is equal to ten contact hours.  Upon completion of this course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 2.1 CEUs.
