Uncovering the Microbial World of Bacteria
October 11, 2023
Speaker:
Tiffany Zarrella, PhD, (MICR 311)
Dr. Zarrella earned a PhD in Immunology and Microbial Disease from Albany Medical College and a BS in Biochemistry from Syracuse University. She has been teaching microbiology courses at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences since 2020. Dr. Zarrella is a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Anupama Khare at the National Cancer Institute, where she studies polymicrobial interactions between co-infecting bacterial pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. These bacterial species often cause chronic, antibiotic resistant infections. She is elucidating the environmental conditions and molecular mechanisms that govern interbacterial communication and microbial behaviors. Understanding these underlying pathways in interspecies interactions will lead to novel strategies to disrupt persistent bacterial infections. She was awarded a PRAT postdoctoral fellowship by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to support this research.
