Data Science All Around Us: An Overview of Next Generation Sequencing
May 25, 2022
Speaker:
Sally Chang, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, NHGRI, NIH (BIOF 521)
An overview of the wide world of topics and techniques covered by next generation sequencing. The relevance of sequencing techniques to a broad range of scientists, both in terms of societal relevance (think Covid-19 genomics and CRISPR) and relevance to scientific research, even if it doesn’t currently involve sequencing. Preview of FAES offerings to help get up to speed on this important and quickly evolving field, no matter your experience level.

What is the Matter with the Mind?
October 13, 2022
Speaker:
Sharif Kronemer, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, NIMH (BIOL 325, NEURO 305)
From where does consciousness emerge? This question has been a topic of query for millennia. Early consensus of non-physical or immaterial sources of consciousness converted in recent centuries to pure material mediums, particularly the brain. This talk explores the debate on the source of consciousness, share evidence that clued in earlier inquiries - long before modern neuroscience - that the brain was the seat of consciousness, and discuss whether a material mind suggests the possibility of an artificial consciousness. Dr. Sharif Kronemer studies consciousness and teaches neuroscience courses with FAES including BIOL 325, Human Neuroscience, available in the Fall 2022 Session B term. His course NEUR 305, The Neural Mechanisms of Consciousness was first offered in Summer 2022

R vs Python: A Comparative Overview -choosing a first coding language-
August 11, 2021
Speaker:
Amanda Kowalczyk, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Pittsburgh Department of Computational and Systems Biology (STAT 101, STAT 515)
Dr. Amanda Kowalczyk recently earned her PhD in computational biology with a genomics specialization from the University of Pittsburgh under advisement from Drs. Maria Chikina and Nathan Clark. She is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Clark and Chikina labs prior to transitioning to a postdoctoral fellow position at Carnegie Mellon University supported by its Neuroscience Institute under co-advisement of Drs. Andreas Pfenning and Alison Barth. Dr. Kowalczyk has spent most of her research career building and using computational tools to analyze genomic data, with authorship on papers published in Science, eLife, MBE, and Bioinformatics. Outside of her research, she greatly enjoys teaching a variety of topics related to coding, statistics, and genomics.
