Course Description

If you do not currently hold an NIH-issued badge, we ask that you email us at registrar@faes.org as soon as you register so we can start the visitor process. Once you confirm that you do not hold a current NIH badge you will receive a secure link from the VisitNIH system which will prompt you to input your information; further steps may be necessary if you are a non-U.S. person visitor. We also ask that you review the NIH Visitor Information page, so you are prepared for your visit to the NIH Bethesda Campus. Please note this process may take up to 45 days.

Online Live Sessions: Every Wednesday: 7:00PM to 8:00PM ET
In-Person Sessions: Two Fridays, April 24 & May 8, 2026: 10:00AM to 4:00PM ET

This is a blended training workshop comprising of online asynchronous sessions April 13 through May 7, 2026, weekly online live sessions on Wednesdays, and two in-person lab sessions on April 24 and May 8, 2026, at the National Institutes of Health, Main Campus in Bethesda, MD, in the FAES Learning Labs.

Overview
The biopharmaceutical industry demands a workforce fluent in technical language, compliant with regulatory standards, and capable of operating in complex, fast-paced environments. This four-week hybrid workshop builds industry readiness through a combination of online instruction and hands-on laboratory training. Participants will gain foundational knowledge in upstream and downstream bioprocessing, cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice), GLP (Good Laboratory Practice), and GDP (Good Documentation Practice).

The online component includes weekly live sessions, assignments, and video-based instruction that focus on core industry concepts. The in-person sessions immerse learners in real-world practices such as aseptic technique, gowning procedures, SOP completion, batch record documentation, media preparation, filtration, and chromatography.

This workshop is ideal for those seeking a career in the bioprocessing industry or transitioning into regulated lab environments.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the workshop successfully, you will be able to:

  • Define key terminology and stages of bioprocessing, from upstream development to final product.
  • Describe the principles of cGMP, GLP, and GDP, and apply them to routine lab operations.
  • Explain the regulatory landscape governing biopharma production, including FDA, EMA, and ICH guidelines.
  • Prepare sterile media and practice aseptic technique in a GMP-compliant setting.
  • Perform basic downstream operations such as filtration and chromatography.
  • Complete SOPs and batch records using ALCOA+ data integrity standards.
  • Recognize the roles and responsibilities within biotech companies, from R&D to QA/QC and manufacturing.
  • Apply job-seeking strategies including resume development, mock interviews, and personal branding.

Microcredential(s)

This workshop applies toward the Biomedical Sciences Endeavor digital badge.

Prerequisites

Participants should have prior coursework or hands-on experience in the biological sciences. Familiarity with basic microbiology, sterile technique, and laboratory safety is expected.

Software/Equipment Requirements
A computer with internet access for online sessions. All lab equipment and PPE will be provided during the onsite portion.

Target Audience
This workshop is designed for early-career scientists, recent graduates, and professionals transitioning into biotech roles who want to build industry-relevant skills and demonstrate their readiness to work in GMP-regulated environments.

Credit
Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. One CEU is equal to ten contact hours. Upon completion of this course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 2.8 CEUs.
