Course Description

Workshops generally run from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET.

Simultaneous access to two screens is highly recommended for best learning experience. Examples include one computer with two screens, two computers, one laptop and one tablet, etc.

Overview
Generative AI has significantly impacted society, enabling the automation of many tasks, including document reviews, computer programming, and image creation. Despite the many potential benefits, identifying the best tools and methods to leverage generative AI in science/research environments can be challenging. This project-based workshop covers best practices for leveraging LLMs for complex professional tasks in science/research. These include:

  1. Strengths and weaknesses of common tools (across specific applications)
  2. The use of application programming interfaces (APIs) to enhance automation
  3. Simple ways to design agent-based frameworks that improve performance on difficult instructions
  4. Accessible methods for retrieval augmented generation (RAG), giving the model access to relevant knowledge
  5. How to fine-tune a custom generative AI model in fewer than 10 lines of code.

Prerequisite
All coding will be very basic and done in Python, using APIs from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Those who are interested in building AI models for big data projects (e.g., multi-omic studies) may wish to enroll in BIOF 050.

Consider taking these courses or workshops first
BIOF 309 | Introduction to Python
BIOF 020 | Python for Beginners

Credit
Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours.   One CEU is equal to ten contact hours. Upon completion of the course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 2.1 CEUs.

This workshop applies toward the Bioinformatics Endeavor digital badge.
