Course Description

Physiology showcases the complexity and intricacy of biology. None may be more elaborate than the nervous system. While the elucidation of other physiological systems began centuries ago, the nervous system was shrouded in mystery until technological breakthroughs allowed access to the long-hidden structures and dynamics of the nervous system. NEUR 325 is a general overview of the major insights gained to date on the human nervous system. The primary themes discussed include basic neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and the neural mechanisms underlying sensory/motor systems, perception, emotion, language, and memory. This course also highlights clinical groups and research in non-human animals that help to demonstrate the healthy structure and function of the human nervous system.

The course aims to educate students on the basics of the human nervous system. Moreover, students will practice their skills for evaluating primary research literature in human neuroscience.

Learner Outcomes

When you complete the course successfully, you will be able to:

  • Describe the basic dynamics of neurophysiology, including cellular units and neural signaling.
  • Detail the gross anatomy and function of the human nervous system.
  • Identify the primary methods used in contemporary human neuroscience and explain what details about the nervous system they disclose.
  • Critically evaluate primary literature in human neuroscience.

Microcredential(s)

This course applies toward the Biomedical Sciences Endeavor digital badge.
